An Unforgettable Honor! Inheritance of Silence wins TWO Shakespeare Global Prize Awards

There are moments in an author's life that seem almost impossible to put into words. Today is one of those moments.

I am incredibly honored to announce that my debut novel, Inheritance of Silence, has been named the 2026 Shakespeare Global Prize Winner for Contemporary Fiction and has also received the Best Independent Press Title award.

When I first began writing Inheritance of Silence, I wasn't thinking about awards or recognition. I was focused on telling an authentic story about identity, resilience, healing, and the families we choose along the way. I wanted to create characters who felt real—people whose struggles, triumphs, and quiet moments might help readers feel a little less alone.

To see that story now recognized on an international stage is both humbling and deeply meaningful.

This award represents far more than a trophy or a title. It is a reminder that stories rooted in compassion, authenticity, and hope have the power to reach readers across cultures and backgrounds. Every review, every message from a reader who found themselves reflected in the pages, and every person who has shared the book with someone they love has helped make this moment possible.

Publishing Inheritance of Silence has been one of the greatest adventures of my life. Since its release, the novel has connected me with readers from around the world, opened doors I never imagined, and introduced me to an incredible community of book lovers, authors, reviewers, librarians, and fellow creatives. This latest recognition feels like another chapter in that journey rather than its conclusion.

As an independent press title, this award carries an especially meaningful message. Independent publishing continues to demonstrate that exceptional stories can come from every corner of the literary world. Passion, perseverance, and dedication matter, and independent authors and publishers are helping shape the future of modern publishing.

Looking back, I'm reminded that every milestone has been built one step at a time. Writing the manuscript. Revising countless drafts. Experiencing the excitement—and uncertainty—of publication. Meeting readers at book events. Receiving thoughtful reviews. Celebrating nominations. Each moment has contributed to this incredible achievement.

While I am immensely grateful for these awards, I know this is only the beginning.

There are still many stories waiting to be told. House of Windows arrives later this year, several additional manuscripts are currently complete, and I continue seeking literary representation as I grow my career as an author. This recognition encourages me to keep writing, keep challenging myself creatively, and keep believing in the power of stories to connect us.

To everyone who has purchased a copy of Inheritance of Silence, attended an event, shared a recommendation, left a review, or simply encouraged me along the way—thank you.

You believed in this story.

These awards belong to all of us.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you for being part of this journey. I cannot wait to share what comes next.

With gratitude,

John Erik Dunnam
