About John Erik Dunnam
Who is John Erik Dunnam?
John Erik Dunnam is an award-winning contemporary fiction author whose work explores themes of identity, healing, resilience, found family, and the courage to embrace authenticity. Through emotionally driven storytelling and deeply relatable characters, he aims to create novels that stay with readers long after they've turned the final page.
Where are you from?
I was born in Semmes, Alabama and raised in Birmingham, Alabama before relocating to Fort Worth, Texas. Both places have shaped my perspective, and you'll often find pieces of my experiences woven throughout my stories.
Why did you become an author?
I became an author because I wanted to connect with people on a deeper level. Stories have the power to make readers feel seen, understood, and less alone. My hope is that every book I write reminds someone that healing is possible and that their story matters.
What genres do you write?
I primarily write contemporary fiction with strong emotional and literary elements. My stories often explore personal transformation, relationships, identity, mental health, family dynamics, and hope.
Are your books autobiographical?
While my books are works of fiction, many of the emotions, experiences, and themes are inspired by real life. Rather than telling my own story directly, I create fictional characters who navigate authentic emotional journeys that many readers can relate to.
About My Books
Which book should I read first?
If you're new to my work, I recommend beginning with Inheritance of Silence, my debut novel. It introduces readers to my storytelling style and the themes that continue throughout my writing.
Do your books need to be read in order?
No. Each novel is written to stand on its own, although readers who follow my work from the beginning may notice recurring themes and emotional connections across my books.

Writing Process
Where do your story ideas come from?
Inspiration comes from everywhere—conversations, life experiences, relationships, places I've visited, and moments that make me stop and think. I often begin with a question or an emotion rather than a plot.
How long does it take you to write a novel?
Every project is different. Some stories develop quickly, while others require months—or even years—of planning, writing, revising, and editing before they're ready for publication.
Do you outline your books?
Usually, yes. I enjoy creating a roadmap before I begin writing, but I also leave room for characters to surprise me along the way.
What themes do you enjoy exploring?
Many of my novels explore:
- Identity
- Healing
- Grief
- Mental health
- Found family
- Hope
- Personal growth
- Love
- Resilience
- Self-discovery
Events & Speaking
Do you participate in book signings?

Are you available for speaking engagements?
Yes. I'm available for author talks, book clubs, library events, conferences, educational programs, and virtual appearances.
If you're interested in inviting me to speak, please use the Contact page.
Can my book club invite you?
I'd love to! When scheduling allows, I'm happy to join book clubs virtually or in person to discuss my books, writing process, and answer readers' questions.
For Readers
What do you hope readers take away from your books?
More than anything, I hope readers walk away believing that healing is possible.
Life isn't always easy. We all carry experiences that shape who we become. If my stories can help someone feel understood, encourage compassion, or remind them that they aren't alone, then I've accomplished exactly what I set out to do as a writer.
Can I contact you?
Absolutely.
I enjoy hearing from readers and appreciate every message, whether it's about one of my books, a signing event, or simply to say hello. While I can't always respond immediately, I do read every message I receive.
