People often ask me how I balance being an author while working full-time in property management.

Some days, I don't.

Both careers demand an incredible amount of emotional energy. Both require patience, problem-solving, communication, and the ability to navigate situations that don't always have easy answers. While they may seem like two completely different worlds, I've discovered that they complement one another more than most people realize.

Wearing Two Different Hats

By day, I serve as an Assistant Community Manager in the property management industry. Every day presents something different. One moment I'm helping a resident through a difficult situation, the next I'm reviewing financial reports, coordinating with vendors, assisting with leasing operations, or working alongside an incredible team to keep a community running smoothly.

Property management isn't just about apartments.

It's about people.

Every resident has a story. Every conversation requires empathy, professionalism, and the ability to listen before responding. Those experiences have taught me invaluable lessons about human nature—lessons that naturally find their way into my writing.

When readers tell me my characters feel authentic, I smile because many of those emotional truths were learned through years of working with people from every imaginable background.

Then the Author Takes Over

When the workday ends, another part of my life begins.

I become John Erik Dunnam, the author.
