Today, I turn 43.
And if there is one thing the last forty-three years have taught me, it is this:
Life rarely follows the outline.
There are plot twists you never planned for. Chapters you would have gladly skipped. Characters who disappear before you are ready. Doors that close without explanation. Moments when the entire story seems to be headed in the wrong direction.
And then, somehow, there are chapters that remind you why you kept writing.
Today, on my 43rd birthday, I find myself looking backward with gratitude—but even more importantly, looking forward with anticipation.
Forty-Two Gave Me a Lot to Write About
This past year has been extraordinary, complicated, challenging, surprising, and transformative.
I became a published novelist.
Inheritance of Silence entered the world and began a journey I could never have completely predicted when I first sat down to write it. It found readers. It earned recognition. It opened doors. Most importantly, it proved something to me:
The stories I carried around for years deserved to exist outside of my imagination.
Then came House of Windows, another piece of this growing literary world I have been building.
And somewhere along the way, two books became something much larger.
There are more manuscripts.
More characters.
More worlds.
More stories waiting for their turn.
What started as the dream of publishing a book has evolved into building an entire body of work—the Dunnamverse—with stories that range from deeply emotional to mysterious, hilarious, uncomfortable, hopeful, and occasionally completely ridiculous.
Honestly, that feels appropriate.
So does life.
The Year I Learned to Bet on Myself
Forty-two wasn't simply about publishing books.
It was about learning what happens when you stop waiting for permission.
I submitted my work.
I entered competitions.
I pursued opportunities.
I questioned things when they didn't feel right.
I advocated for my books, my career, and myself.
I learned more about publishing than I ever expected to know. I learned that being an author isn't simply about writing a manuscript and handing it to someone else.
It is business.
It is persistence.
It is marketing.
It is relationships.
It is rejection.
It is opportunity.
And sometimes, it is staring at your email inbox wondering whether the message you've been waiting for is finally going to appear.
Through all of it, I kept moving.
So, What Does 43 Look Like?
I don't know.
And for perhaps the first time in my life, I am becoming comfortable with that answer.
There are manuscripts under consideration.
There are publishing conversations happening.
There are awards and competitions still unfolding.
There are professional opportunities ahead.
There are books waiting to be written.
There are ideas scribbled in places they probably shouldn't be.
And there is an entire future that hasn't introduced itself yet.
That uncertainty once would have terrified me.
Today, it excites me.
Because I've learned that some of the best chapters begin before you understand where they're going.
My Birthday Wish
My wish for 43 isn't fame.
It isn't perfection.
It isn't even certainty.
My wish is momentum.
I want to keep creating.
Keep learning.
Keep laughing.
Keep taking chances.
Keep walking into rooms I once thought were beyond my reach.
Keep telling stories that make people feel something.
And keep building a life that would make the younger version of me stop for a moment and say:
"Wait. We actually did all of that?"
Yes.
We did.
And we're not finished.
Chapter 43 Begins Now
There is something beautifully poetic about being an author and realizing that your own life remains the story you understand the least.
I know the endings of my novels.
I know where the characters are going.
I can rewrite their mistakes.
I can delete their worst decisions.
I can give them redemption whenever I choose.
Real life doesn't offer that kind of editorial control.
You simply turn the page.
So today, I turn another one.
Forty-three years.
Two published novels.
A growing catalogue of stories.
A universe taking shape.
A career still unfolding.
A ridiculous number of ideas.
And absolutely no intention of becoming boring anytime soon.
Thank you to everyone who has read a book, written a review, attended an event, sent a message, shared a post, encouraged the work, challenged me, supported me, or simply watched this strange adventure unfold.
You are part of this story, too.
Here's to 43.
Here's to the stories already written.
Here's to the ones still waiting.
And here's to finding out what happens next.
Happy birthday to me.
